Transforming Play, Building Future
The air in Arawa, Central Bougainville, has recently been filled with something more than just the tropical heat — it has been buzzing with the sound of power tools, the clinking of steel, and the unmistakable melody of children's laughter.
From March to April 2025, Bougainville Sankamap Australia Association Inc, alongside a dedicated coalition of community partners, turned a vision into reality. This is the journey of our playground installation project at the Arawa Peace Park — dedicated to our "Little Humans" and the future of our region.

The Journey to Day One
Our mission began with a simple but powerful belief: #kidsdeservebetter. In mid-March we set the date and sent out a call for support, and the response was overwhelming. This was not just a construction project — it was a community-led movement.
By April 14th, the atmosphere at our pre-project briefing was electric. With support from the Arawa Urban Council, the Bougainville Youth Federation, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government, we knew we were building hope.
Four Days of Grit and Gratitude
- Day 1: Unpacking, sorting, sanding, and painting. We treated our equipment like precious cargo, making sure every bolt and slide was ready.
- Day 2: Despite the searing heat, the crew moved the playgrounds from the yard to the Peace Park, watched by curious children stopping by.
- Day 3: Thanks to a cement mixer from Mr. Henry Potabu of Bakaku Construction, we finished the first two installations ahead of schedule.
- Day 4: Two fully installed playgrounds, made possible by Absolute Building Construction (ABC) Pty Ltd from Buin and the support of Pastor Kenny and the Arawa Baptist Church.
The Road Ahead: Our Vision for a "Safe Zone"
The installations are the foundation. Our Phase 2 roadmap:
- Safety and security — fencing, a 40km/h zone, and a zebra crossing on the adjacent road.
- Supporting caregivers — seating benches for mothers and guardians.
- Health and hygiene — rubbish bins and a dedicated toilet block.
- Nurturing the mind — a mini kids' library on-site.
- Sustainability — solar lights for safe access after dark.
